My whole life I've struggled to find the balance between non-offensive and honest, down-to-earth but serious when it has come to the topic of religion. I strive to be a pretty down to earth individual when it comes to the opinions of others. I certainly would never put myself above anyone. I know that we all struggle with sin in different ways and are raised with different philosophical ideas. Given my open-minded tendencies, sometimes it is difficult for me to express my allegiance to a faith that is very clear and strict with regards to its positions...even when some of those opinions seem narrow and are not popular. When I'm out in the field, I wonder how I am going to delineate between self-righteous and righteous, over-zealous and enthusiastic about the gospel?
I'm not from an area where Mormonism is the norm. Sometimes sharing what I believe can be awkward. As a missionary I hope to be able to share what I believe in a way that interests others and speaks well of the members my faith. As an LDS missionary, it is not my goal to get in people's faces or to bother them. Instead, I am seeking to spread a message that has brought long lasting happiness and an element of peace into my life. I regret not being more of an example in the past, and I hope I can better my life and those of others by sharing the message of my faith in Japan.
